Seasons of Health

I have a love / hate relationship with New Years Resolutions.

I love them because I like to set goals. I like to set a vision of the future before me and aim for it. It gives me the clarity for the actions I need to take.

Yet I hate them because I see so many people talk about all of these things they are going to do in the New Year, and then they do nothing. They come up short!

As I reflect on the reason I hate New Years Resolutions, I realize that there is a part of me that has come up short so many times. I have not always carried through on what I said I was going to do.

Many times I have set a resolution to lose weight or get in better shape, and I have come to learn that I had been setting my goals wrong in multiple ways.

The lack of clarity of knowing when I had met that goal was a big reason I had given up on the goal.

How would I know when I had lost enough weight? How would I know if I was in better shape?

Many people set health goals. In one sense they are the easiest to set and begin to work towards.

Yet they can also be the goals we give up on the quickest.

When we do not see the progress as quickly as we thought we would, we abandon the goal.

When we do not enjoy the process of reaching the goal, we give up on it altogether.

Our health is the first area of life that many of us desire to change, yet it is the first area of life we tend to give up on. We fall back into our old habits, because—let’s be honest—change is difficult.

Changing our habits regarding how we move and what we eat can be hard. Yet the importance of doing so can determine the quality of our lives.

While it is difficult when we have not been practicing good habits, we need to ask ourselves the question:

What does this season require of us in our Health?

Are we as strong as we need to be physically?

Are we as strong as we want to be physically?

We always start with questions to determine 1- where we are, 2 - where we want to go, and then 3 - lay out the plan of how to get there.

What does this season require of you in your health?
